Detroit man charged in sexual assaults

Detroit — A 22-year-old Detroit man was arraigned today on charges he raped a 23-year-old woman and tried to rape an 84-year-old woman until he was foiled by an alert neighbor.

Kenneth Martell Lofton was ordered held in the Wayne County Jail until his preliminary hearing, said John Roach, a second deputy chief and spokesman for the Detroit police. Lofton is charged with two counts of felony first degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a sentence of up to life in prison.

Police said Lofton attacked the 23-year old Tuesday as she stood at a bus stop near East Vernor and East Grand Boulevard. He allegedly used a gun and forced her into a vacant home where he sexually assaulted her.

Police believe Lofton attacked the elderly woman about 10:45 a.m. Jan. 25 as she was walking home from a store near Mack and East Grand Boulevard. He allegedly forced her into a vacant lot and attempted to sexually assault her. He fled after a neighbor intervened, police said.
